- Tooth Cavities
- Cavities in the teeth are the number one reason that you might need a filling. A cavity forms due to a buildup of harmful bacteria in the mouth, consuming sugary drinks or snacks and not brushing correctly.
- You might notice a visible pit in the tooth, discoloration or pain when biting down, indicating a cavity has developed. In some instances, you might not be aware that tooth decay has set in, which is why it is vitally important to maintain regular checkups with your dentist.
- Fracturing the Teeth
- The tooth consists of a hard outer layer of enamel and a middle layer of dentin protecting a soft pulp of nerves and blood vessels. A fracture can affect the enamel only, or penetrate all the way to the pulp. You may notice pain and sensitivity in the area. Tooth fractures can occur due to trauma, such as falling or sports injuries. Chewing hard foods like candy, ice or popcorn kernels might lead to breakage.
- A fracture in the tooth can result in unsightly discoloration and allow decay to set in more easily. If you suspect fractures in your teeth, visit your dentist as soon as possible.
- Replacing Old Fillings
- Fillings are incredibly durable and may last for ten years. However, in some instances, composite fillings may change color, or the bond between the filling and the tooth might wear away. Bacteria may enter through gaps or cracks in a filling, causing decay to develop within the tooth.
